I (NEED) To Be A Worker For The Lord

You most likely know the song we sing, “I want to be a worker of the Lord.” I want to present a perspective change. If we change “want” to "need,” the lyrics of the song carry a different weight now. For example, “I need to be a worker for the Lord; I need to trust and love his holy word.” It changes the urgency with which we view working for the Lord. Working for Jesus should be based not solely on whether you want to but also on the notion that you need to.

The idea of work shows up over and over again in scripture. In Genesis 2:2, it tells us that God rested on the seventh day from all his work. So what would have happened if God had never started working in the first place? There would be no creation, there would be no church, and there would be no you and me.

1 Thessalonians 2:13, Paul was grateful that the church in Thessalonica received the word, and he says, “For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.” So the word was also working in those who believed.  What if the word stopped working?

If we take a look at the works performed in scripture, we can see that they are extremely necessary. Your work for the Lord and His church today is also extremely necessary! If these works were never performed, imagine what the outcomes would have been. We need to be workers for the Lord!
