Son of God?

(Satan Knew) When Jesus was in the wilderness being tempted, the devil challenged Jesus with a statement. Matthew 4:3 says, And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” This word “if” is what is called a first-class conditional in the original language. This means, that what is said is to be taken as already known to be true and therefore should be understood as the word “since.” From this understanding Satan was not trying to see if Jesus was the Son of God, he already knew Jesus was.

(John Knew) In the gospel according to John, it Is recorded that John goes about saying, “And I myself have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John 1:34). John knew and had seen enough to understand that this wasn’t just a good teacher, or just a good preacher, but the Son of God.

(God Knew) Throughout scripture, Jesus’ relationship to God is strengthened repeatedly. For example, God himself speaks to this, “Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, Chosen One; listen to Him!” (Luke 9:35) God confirmed that the man they were seeing was indeed His Son.

All this being said goes to show us that when we believe in Jesus when we come into His church, it is not the church of just some good man or just some great motivational speaker. Jesus, the one who died to forgive the sins of the world was someone who had the power to do it.

(Do you know?) In your daily life, who do you say Jesus is? Do you share Him as a guy who had some great motivational lines? Do you share Him as a guy who was a good preacher? Look deep into your life for the things He has done that perhaps you have overlooked, and you too can begin to see His power and be able to say, “I myself have seen, and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” (John 1:34)
